Ioana Petcu-Colan
Violin
Ioana Petcu-Colan enjoys a rich and diverse career following a musical education in France, UK and Ireland. She has collaborated with artists as diverse as Barry Douglas (piano), John Abercrombie (jazz guitar), Martin Hayes (traditional fiddle) and Canadian rock group Arcade Fire. As a chamber musician, she has performed at international festivals including Cheltenham, Ryedale, Bergen, Heidelberger Frühling, West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Kilkenny Arts Festival, Clandeboye and Sligo New Music Festival.
Recordings include the Bruch Concerto with the RTÉ CO and a disc of piano trios with Ensemble Avalon, both on the Lyric label. As soloist with the Ulster Orchestra, she has performed Mozart Violin Concerto in D, Mendelssohn Double Concerto with Michael McHale and live on BBC Radio 3 as soloist in the UK premiere of Sullen Earth by Ian Wilson. Contemporary music plays a big part in Ioana’s professional life, she was invited by major international publishing house Universal Edition to edit ‘Violin Project’ and highlights include working intensively with Arvo Pärt on his own music, duetting with Philip Glass in concert and a performance broadcast on BBC3 of Luigi Nono’s La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura. Other projects include Ian Wilson’s critically acclaimed Una Santa Oscura, described as ‘an opera without words’ for staged solo violin in collaboration with composer Ian Wilson and theatre director Tom Creed. Veer, on the Riverrun label, is a disc of Ian’s string quartets recorded during Ioana’s time as leader of the Callino Quartet. Ioana is currently Associate Leader with the Ulster Orchestra.
